Do I Log In or Login?

July 10, 2011Shane PurnellCommunication, TechnologyLog in, login

While writing an email today, I typed “Have the user login”. I stopped, looked at what I had typed and thought, “That doesn’t look right”.

I realized there had to be a proper spelling or syntax for what I was trying to type. I found the answer through a Google search (or is it googlesearch).

To log in is a verb. When you tell a user to “log in”, use two words.

Login is a noun; although as Wikipedia notes, it’s used like an adjective in compound nouns. “Check the login page”.

Armed with the knowledge of how to “log in” to the” login page”, I completed my email and moved on a smarter SysAdmin.

The same rules apply for log out and logout, log on and logon, log off and logoff.
