As the old Rogers and Hammerstein quote goes

You gotta have a dream. If you don’t have a dream, how you gonna make a dream come true?

Maybe your parents were like mine and said,  “Go for your dreams but have a backup plan.” Maybe you’re like me and your back up plan became your primary plan and your now you’re trying to pursue your dream as your back up plan.

How do you pursue your dreams when you already have a full time job? It’s not easy and here are three things you must do to pursue your dreams when you can’t  pursue them full time.

How To Pursue Your Dreams When Can’t Pursue them Full Time

Be Realistic

As much as I’m a believer in “you can do anything”, I’m  also a believer in “you can’t do everything”. There’s only so much time in the day. If you have a full time job with family responsibilities, you have to take that into account. Your dreams may not happen like you think they will. There’s only so much time in the day.

Put First Things First

You have to know what’s most important in your life. Of all the things you have to get done today, what’s going to make the biggest impact? Maybe you can’t get three things done to pursue your dreams, but maybe you can get one done.

If getting one thing done in pursuit of your dreams is the most important thing,  do it. If preparing for an upcoming meeting is the most important thing, do that. If being there for your son or daughter’s school event is the most important thing that day, do that.  Whatever the most important thing is that day, make it your top priority.

Adjust Your Vision

When you can’t pursue your dreams full time, they may take longer to realize than you planned. Adjust the timeline for your goal. Check to see if it still makes sense given the amount of time you have.  Maybe you thought you could reach your goal in two years originally. The truth is maybe it will take ten. It’s ok.

Take Away

I don’t want you to say no to your dreams, but for the vast majority of us with family responsibilities, we have to be realistic, set our priorities and adjust our vision to keep our dreams alive.  Don’t throw away the true treasures in life in order to pursue your dreams. Family and relationships are a form of wealth too. Make sure you factor them into your dreams. Remember you can do anything, but you can’t do everything….at once.  Keep your dreams alive, pursue your dreams.  You gotta have a dream if you want to make a dream come true.
